Video clip: Jenny finds negative reviews very irritating but must not be taken personally. In her experience papers are always improved by external criticism.
I have never had a paper that hasn’t been improved by the process of review. You can always improve things. You can, you know, and you can, sometimes you have the opportunity to send it back to the same journal which is great, sometimes you don’t. And you have to send it to another journal but the paper will be improved by that external criticism because if people are not understanding it, it must be something to do with the way you’re trying to convey the information, even if you think it was perfectly clear and, you know, many is the time I’ve sat and ranted at these anonymous reviewers but then, you know, take a deep breath, look at what they’re saying, make the necessary changes and submit it again. And, and there have been times in my life when, very early on, when actually the criticism was just too hard to take and I think you just have to, you have to get over that, because it’s not personal.
