Getting funding for a PhD and being a graduate student
Video clip: Anushka was awarded an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship. She collected pilot data before she applied. The application forms were long and the interview was daunting.
Actually writing the application for these fellowships and grants, how did you find that?
That was hard. Obviously I hadn’t done anything like that before and so navigating those forms and understanding what it is you need to get down and make sense of it is, is, it’s a long task. You really have to allow a long time for it. But it’s a really good process to go through and it does make you really sort of focus on what the projects about, what you want to get out of it, and how you’re going to get there. And I think having done it once before for the, for the main Fellowship I’m hoping that I’ll be able to use that experience and build on it for the future.
And for your last fellowship what was the interview like?
So the interview was, it was, it was quite daunting. I mean you sort of walked in and there were 15 people on a panel, and the first thing we had to do was give a presentation and in a way that’s quite nice ‘cos you can prepare that and so you, you can control how it starts at least and set, and set the pace a little. And, and it was good because they seemed to respond well to the presentation. And then I just remember getting lots of different questions that sort of reflected individuals interest areas, and so they were naturally coming at my project from their perspective. And so the main thing was sort of trying to understand what, what they’re getting at and where they’re coming from and trying to bring it back round to your project and how that, how that goes. But yeah it was quite, it was quite a nerve wracking experience. Yeah.
Can you talk a little bit about how you managed to get your fellowship please?
Yes, sure. I think doing a lecturer post before applying for the fellowship had a major impact on getting the fellowship because it did enable me to first of all get to know my area pretty well, and to also start designing the study that I wanted to do, and ever collect pilot data. And so I think that was really critical in terms of securing the funding. And obviously I was in a position where I was supported by experts in the field who were able to sort of nurture me towards that, that point.
