Women in Science
Video clip: Xin explains that when she was growing up in China it was normal practice for women to take their babies into work place nurseries.
In China is child care shared more equally between men and women than it is here?
I think it, you know obviously there are two things which I think from my view is sets apart and certainly when I was growing up and I don’t know like exactly what happens now but when I was growing up you could have child care just within your institution, so you could bring your baby in and you go to work, you could breastfeed in the break, you know, in break in time. And you come back to work. So that’s everywhere and therefore it’s a lot easier for a woman to actually take in the babies and go to work and then you see that all the time, and there are ladies will take their babies and go into work early in the morning and take them back in the evening.
Oh that’s interesting.
And so that’s a really important one. The second one I guess is also the Chinese culture is always as such grandparents are there, delighted to look after your grandchildren and the next generation. And then that’s very deep in the culture, if they don’t and they would not be happy. So that also helped a lot.
