Women in Science
Part-time and flexible working
Video clip: Alison does not think that working part-time is attractive to scientists because they are emotionally involved in their work.
You’ve always worked full-time apart from when you took the maternity leave, haven’t you?
I don’t think working part-time is at all attractive for a scientist, because it’s very hard to do it on a part-time level. There’s so much of your own emotional buy-in to your work, so you’d end up probably doing the same job for less money. And that’s certainly the experience of colleagues who have gone part-time. It’s very hard to apply that structure to science.
