Support from Colleagues
Interview excerpt: Humour is often used to diffuse social situations, but Mary found it was not always appropriate or welcome.
I know it's a social awkwardness on the part of colleagues, rather than anything else. But there was a lot - In fact, I had a comment just last week. Jokes about me using audio equipment. And it seems odd to me, really, that you'd make jokes about that. Because you wouldn't make jokes about someone using a white cane. And I don't know why I, I found it - I normally have a really thick skin, so I don't know why I felt particularly sensitive about it [laughing]. But it didn't seem helpful to me, to have jokes about – you, you know - listening to things on audio. You know, that was the only way I could read, I suppose that's why. Because you have emotional investment in reading as an academic don't you, and it's troubling that I couldn't read. So, that wasn't good.
