Mmm. I think the most important thing for a line manager is not to be afraid of mental health problems. Obviously it can be quite a frightening thing for people, both for the person who's experiencing it, and the people around us. Particularly if you know they might be at risk of suicide, or something like that. I think don't be afraid to have open conversations with people. Find out as much as you can about different mental health conditions. So things like the Mind charity website have readable information about almost every sort of main - well, mainstream and less mainstream mental health conditions. So you can find out information about schizophrenia, or anxiety, depression, personality disorders and stuff. I think if you have some basic education, then you're less likely to be afraid. I think the most important thing is to be - just be prepared to have open conversations, and actually ask people how they're feeling. And ask that in a way where people are not just going to say "Oh, I'm fine, thanks." Or be kind of overly - overly sympathetic. Sometimes sympathy is not very good.
